ASTM D-4761 testing for developing allowable design stresses of foreign lumber
At WAS we have the in house capability of performing numerous mechanical property evaluations according to the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) standardized tests. Our Tinius Olsen 10,000lb bench top test machine is used for determining modulus of rupture (MOR) and modulus of elasticity (MOE), compression-parallel-to-grain, compression-perpendicular-to-grain, shear, tension-parallel-to-grain and hardness for solid wood and wood-based materials. Additionally we have the capability of calibrating aluminum bars and proving rings used for quality control purposes.

Our in-grade full size lumber testing machine is used to evaluate lumber in bending as well as in tension. Material from 2”x4”x8’ up to 2”x10” x 16’ sizes are frequently evaluated. All data is recorded using a computer operated system.

We also have the capability of performing ASTM concentrated load testing of plywood panels as well as ASTM adhesive bond characteristics.

ASTM D-143 small clear testing (Bending strength and stiffness, as well as compression strength)
The following are a list of some of the common ASTM Testing Procedures frequently used at WAS:

ASTM D-143, “Test Methods for Small Clear Specimens of Timber.”
ASTM D-198, “Test Methods of Static Tests of Lumber is Structural Sizes.”
ASTM D-1037, “Test Methods for Evaluating Properties of Wood-Base Fiber and Particle Panel Materials.”
ASTM D-2395, “Test Methods for Specific Gravity of Wood and Wood-Base Materials.”
ASTM D-2555, “Test Methods for Establishing Clear Wood Strength Values.”
ASTM D-3043, “Test Methods for Structural Panels in Flexure.”
ASTM D-4761, “Test Methods for Mechanical Properties of Lumber and Wood-Base Structural Material.”

In addition to standardized testing procedures, we have also developed non-standardized procedures that allow us to evaluate a wide range of properties for specific uses. As an example, some tests that are performed at WAS were developed as quality assurance tests for various companies providing wood products which require unique evaluation procedures.

There are other tests and procedures performed at WAS, so if your interest is not listed above please contact us and we can discuss your testing needs in further detail.
